Triphala is the best known and most widely used formula in ayurveda. It has all the properties of its three ingredients - amlaki, haritaki and bibhitaki.
It is a balanced formula for all three doshas ie good for vata, pitta and kapha.

Generally it is a digestive stumulant, mild laxative (without being purgative), rejuvenating, antioxidant, cardiac tonic, appetizer and it promotes eyesight. Used regularly it detoxifies the digestive tract and then the deep tissues.

When taken in large doses at night before bed i.e 1/2 to 1 teaspoon (or 2-4 grams) it has a cleansing, laxative and detoxifying action.

When taken with meals(1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon (or 1-2 grams), it has a building and rejuvenating effect, and stimulates digestion and absorption.

Triphala rejuvenates the intestines, tissues and cells of the body, prevents cancer and aids in weight loss. It also shows strong inhibiting action against all viruses. Triphala is known to promote the absorption of the B vitamins and to improve the general absorption of all nutrients and vitamins.

Because it aids absorption of other substances it is often used mixed with other herbs etc. and is therefore often a part of Ayurvedic formulations.
