The Blastocystis Parasite

Information and Treatment

Blastocystis (blasto) is transmitted in the cystic form. It measures 2 - 5 microns in size. The organism is commonly found in bats, birds, rats, farm animals, pets, wildlife and some water sources (tank, dam, creek and possibly town water). It is easily transmitted via animals and animal droppings. Blasto lives in the colon and possibly invades multiple layers of the colonic wall. It damages intestinal immunity and causes tissue inflammation and destruction. This results in symptoms like stomach pain, flatulence, changes in appetite, lowered absorption and digestion. A water filter of one micron is recommended as the blasto cyst are resistant to chlorine.

Multiple stool specimens are needed for diagnosis. It is recommended to test stool samples on three consecutive days. The watery portion of the stool is more likely to give accurate results.

Diet

Avoid sugars and processed carbohydrates. Eat whole unprocessed foods, a high fibre, wholesome diet. Supplement with high fibre foods such as ground flax seeds, psyllium husks, slippery elm and oat bran. Avoid lactose-containing foods like milk and cheese. However some types of yoghurt are beneficial in small amounts. Choose from Vaalia natural, Jalna drinking yogurt and Yoplus yogurt ½ - 1 cup daily.

Adequate protein is needed daily. Eg. quinoa, fish, tofu or protein powder.(small amounts chicken and red meat only)

Freshly crushed garlic: - ½-1 clove 3 x day (or you can encapsulate it).

Green Tea (4-5 cups daily, preferably decaffeinated – as tea or supplement).

Supplements

Mediherb Probiotica - one capsule 1 x day morning and/or evening (as in our Blasto kit)

if needed.Metagenics (not in Kit) Ultra flora LGG one capsule 1 x day

Optional: 1/2 cup Vaalia yogurt 1 to 2 x daily

Optional: Lactulose syrup: 1 tspn 2 x day building up to 3 tsp 2 x day. Lactulose may cause diarrhoea and flatulence so build up slowly. Lactulose is used medically as a laxative, it feeds the good bacteria and inhibits blasto activity.

Optional: Black cumin seeds (Nigella); 1/2 tspn of ground seed after meals 3 x day

Optional: Oregano oil (Young Living Oil preferably) 4 drops 3 x daily
