Symptoms

After exposure to the chicken pox virus the virus becomes dormant and lives in the sensory nerve roots. Each sensory nerve root supplies a specific area of the skin called a dermatone. When a person becomes run down or generally immune compromised the virus may erupt over one or more of these dermatones. An eruption is associated with pain and a rash. In a healthy person the symptoms usually clear after a few weeks, in older people, those people with chronic illness and immunosuppressed people the condition may last for a few years.
